Red - dresses in red
White - dresses in white

(Enter Red.)
(Stage is dark and a spotlight shines on Red.)

RED
   From darkness I came forth.
A dot left on canvas,
Too big to be ignored,
Too small to fill the space.
I am the record of events I saw,
I am the shadow of whom I perform,
                 Born
on the stage of a bizarre play,
Where skies burnt and stars fell,
Where earth split and rivers dried;
Where actors and actresses came and left,
Where some might sing swansong on their debut.
My life written as a script, so
are those of the people I know.
   The Enemy
As they called me, or other names that appear ahead of my lines.
But now the curtain falls,
   Names, Deeds, Feels –
Nothing means and only darkness prevails.
And here I exist,
        dwell,
          and barricade.

(Enter White.)
(Another spotlight shines on White.)

WHITE
(In indifference)
In darkness I shine,
In adversity I thrive.
I am nothing to the contented,
I am everything to those in need.
Only with wish I shall be defined.
Name it, and watch it realize.

RED
Bright one, who might you be?
A spirit from high, or a phantom from my mind,
Awfully alike to an acquaintance of mine.

WHITE
I am a mirror of you.
I cast who you want to see in me, nothing more, nothing less.
I take the person’s form that appears in your mind,
However my role is yet to be asigned
If you desire a friend, then I’ll be a friend.
Or if you would like a foe, then a foe I will be.

RED
I yearn for both, for my greed upholds.
I yearn for contact, whatever form it might be, brutal or at peace.
But my eyes are dyed in red, and the only thing I know is to bring dread.
In years of crossing swords, I can no longer distinguish who we are to each other,
Friends or foes, or both.

WHITE
(Shift to a severe tone)
Then the foe I shall be, and the foe I am.
For a friend laughs when the other succeeds and cries when the other fails,
Yet you know the best how you act in the opposite ways;
For people make friends with those alike,
Yet there is no similar trait between you and I.

RED
                You and I
are but of the same kind.

WHITE
Have you lost sense in your mind?
I might be brought down from grace for times,
but
My vigilance is always nurtured by pride.
With pride I stand on the high ground, and on the high ground
I am out of your reach long.

RED
   Spirit, where are you standing?
Can’t you see you are but standing on where I should’ve been!?
                            I,
Equally pneumatic, equally wise, equally struggling in the hands of fate.
But what we were born into set us afar,
In privilege you’d live through and in damnation I will eventually die.
What a setup to make a hero and a villain,
What a barrier to separate two souls alike!
To break out from what divides us, I ought to voice myself differently.

WHITE
How is my agony lesser than yours, just because we lived different lives?
Do I not have the Love that you crave?
Do I lack the Hate in which you bathe?
Have I not sung for happiness and wept in vain?

RED
Indeed,
   Sentient one,
Life leads to nothing more than grief.
To meet, to breed –
How merciful is the light they praise,
How glamorous is the hope they paint.
To part, to betray –
So fragile are the earthly bonds as they break,
Only darkness provides solace as we wake.
                   So
   Stay by my side!
Become my possession and exist only for me!
Will I shut your tameless mouth –
Will I annihilate shine from your prideful eyes!
                     Ah yes,
It is I who will seize all your glory within grasp,
It is I who will keep impermanence away from sight.

WHITE
   Imprudent!
What gives birth to your poisonous tongue?
What breeds your vicious deeds?
To live is to adapt and withstand change,
To ride the tide of constant bane.
Whereas to preserve is cowards’ deed,
What brings you the audacity to manipulate me?

RED
   I
seek revenge on my creator
             The Scriptwriter
Who as well formulates my pain –
The One that crippled me and took my worth away,
The One that blessed you with wonders though you walked astray.
I crave your downfall, for you are to suffer just like me;
I crave your shine and heat, for I was to be nonetheless bright.
   Hear me!
Preys of the play,
Pause I’d dare to say!
So no more performance shall continue on stage,
And into eternity we shall escape!

WHITE
A fruit you can never get,
A fantasy that you can never realize!
                Arrogant one,
Have you not had the chance to pacify
Yet you chose to abuse the role you cast?
Can you not tell that time marches on
And your resistance is but too a part of plot?
How can you direct others
Whilst telling yourself lies?

RED
   Then Repel! Repel!
Why make a promise that you cannot fulfill?
Why be a lier like I if that is what you defy?
Leave me alone and never come back!

(Spotlight on White off.)
(Exit White.)

RED
The world is silent again,
I am only I just like what I desired.
But a strange emptiness devoured me,
For I can no longer see myself and no longer exist.
(Shouting around in panic)
My friend, my friend, where might you be?
Talk to me,
Argue with me,
Confront me.
Thinking, revealing, neither fails to accumulate my pain.
                          How
My hands, they despise the arms that grew them out, carving red marks on them scratch after scratch.
Without a rival by my side
To whom should I spill out my criticism?
With what should I define my antagonism?

(In the following lines, Red furiously directs off-stage.)
(As they do so, the stage becomes brighter and brighter. )
(When Red finishes, all the lights are on.)

   No,
      No –
Let the play go on!
Turn the lights on!
   Resume,
        Resume –
Have the stage props set!
Call the performers back!
   Spectators,
         Witness me –
Witness how I exist!
Witness how I –

(Red falls in silence, heads down, face in shadow.)
(Re-enter White from the opposite side of the stage where they left.)
(White searches around and finds Red)

WHITE
(In high spirit)
At last we met again,
At last our strive comes to end.
After all the tears wiped and blood shed,
The play awaits the final act.

RED
(Heads up. In high spirit, too)
Say no more for words are meaningless between foe and foe,
A sword sings better than a letter unfolds.

WHITE
Do we have no way out but to fight?
Though we mirror like binary stars,
Only different in the color we dyed?

RED
No.               You and I
are not of the same kind.
Your path shall be forged through my devastation,
Make no room for hesitation!
The crowd awaits!

WHITE
So be it!

(They fight. )
(All lights off before the two make contact and the stage stays dark for 10 seconds.)
(A spotlight on Red, standing still.)

RED
(Calmly)
I have waited and seen my defeat,
One last stage show and I shall rest in peace.
For a friend laughs when the other succeeds,
And may my downfall be the final brick.

(End)
